Tom!

South Beach and the Keys Underneath

It’s just a regular Miami summer afternoon – unbearable heat, bright sunshine, uncomfortable
humidity, and miles and miles of sandy beaches. I pack my gear and drive to South Beach. First I am
going to snorkel a bit, and then I’ll have well-deserved breakfast, I think to myself.
I hide my car-keys in a secure place (I won’t tell you where) and I dive straight into the water. It
is warm, not refreshing at all. It reminds me of a lake, rather than an ocean. There are no waves
whatsoever that day; just perfect for snorkeling.
Underneath, it’s a world of its own, a unique universe with the strangest plants and creatures,
all perfectly adapted for the life under the water. I am a distraction for them, I do not belong. As much
as I am trying not to disrupt this fragile ecosystem, I become very quickly aware of a fact that everything
and everybody is staring at me.
Eel came out of his little cave to check out the giant “new fish.” Barracudas are circling around
me to let me know that this is their territory. Only the Starfish seems to ignore me, yet I know that’s just
the way stars are – indifferent to their environment.
Jellyfish floats by. I don’t like that. I’ve heard one too many stories about Jellyfish’s sting. And
I’ve heard only one story about how delicious stir-fried chili jellyfish could be. I wonder, can this creature
see me? Is it aware of the purple elephant in the room? I try to swim under it, over it, I circle around it,
looking for the smallest hint of acknowledgment. Nothing. Time to move on, I will not dig anything from
this mine.
I swim further from the shore, probably the furthest I have ever been. It’s not like South Beach is
just a dot in the distance, but I am far. I hope it’s worth. I take a deep breath and I dive under the water.
Few seconds passes before I reach the bottom. Sand looks different here. It is smooth, untouched. Oh
crap, it moves! It’s a stingray. Is it angry? Should I just leave? I don’t care, I wanna touch it. I am running
out of air. I need to act fast. I get closer, stretch my arm, and reach out. One swift move and it’s gone.
No way can I catch up. “Fuck this,” I say to myself right after I emerge from the water.
I had enough. I swim back. I see a barracuda here and there checking what I am up to. I don’t
care anymore. I think about my well-deserved breakfast that is waiting for me in my favorite bakery - it’s
on 15th and Washington Avenue. If you are ever around, just pop in and get a cachito.
I am quite satisfied with this trip. Let’s see what is going to happen next time. Cause there will
be next time. It was like a good sex, I just want to do it again, and for longer. I want to see turtles,
dolphins, manatees, even a little shark if it doesn’t attack me. I just like to visit our friends underneath.
They’re quite interesting crowd.

I can’t complain about this town,
It has its perks, it has its flaws.
I must love this place,
for its beauty, for its laws.
City that never sleeps
Not the one up north
The one at the tip
of what looks like dick of sort.

Hey Puto
Aqui se habla espanol
That guy told me
He wasn’t angry
He was a teacher of sort.
I didn’t listen
I didn’t care
Cause all the Latinas
Understand the language of $$$
People are late
Constantly
People get laid
Occasionally

Do you wanna be that guy
The one that gets them all
The one that shares them all
Liar.
House at the beach,
I don’t think so.
Boat in the marina,
Oh I really don’t think so.
Mama’s boy,
That doesn’t even drive
He is a mama’s boy
And all he does, is lie.
Liar, lawyer, attorney

Or just a doorman
